After completing his postgraduate studies in General Surgery, Dr. Rai undertook intensive trainings on Plastic Surgery from the South Western Medical Center in Dallas as well as the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. He also volunteered as a plastic surgeon in Peru, Ecuador, Vietnam, China, the Philippines and India.His broader experiences across the developing and developed countriesdoes not went unnoticed on visits back to Nepal, where he established a plastic surgery unit at the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital. In 1999, he started a comprehensive cleft program with the support from Interplast. The program was later incorporated into free post burn reconstructive surgical care.The program has provided free of cost reconstruction surgeries to more than twenty thousand people so far. Dr. Rai is now the coordinator of MCh (Plastic Surgery) program of the National Academy of Medical Sciences where healso serves as a Professor of Plastic Surgery. He has organized a dedicated team of plastic and reconstructive surgeons to providing training and education for next generation of plastic surgeons. Dr. Rai is the recipient of several awards for his outstanding humanitarian service within the country and abroad, including the Interplast Humanitarian Award, American Medical Association’s Nathan Davis International Humanitarian Award, Royal Nepal Academy of Science & Technology Talent Award, World of Children Honoree, Smile Train Hero Award, Don Laub Humanitarian Award, Unsung Hero of Compassion Dalai Lama Award, Best Doctor Award, Prabal Janasewa Shree, and Honorary Fellowship of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapist.
