Nepal Hip Fracture Registry (NHFR).
Ongoing
2025-2026
Nepal Health Research Council (NHRC) – lead institution Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) National and regional hospitals (government, private, teaching) Academic and research institutions International partners (e.g., ANZHFR, APFFA) for technical support and benchmarking
Initially, piloted in selected tertiary hospitals (Kathmandu and regional centers) with gradual expansion to all provinces.
Hip fractures are a major and growing public health challenge, particularly for the elderly, leading to high mortality, disability, poor quality of life, and economic burden. In Nepal, lack of standardized data and varied treatment practices hinder effective policy, care, and rehabilitation. Currently, there is no national system to track outcomes or benchmark care quality. The NHFR aims to fill this gap through a centralized, standardized data system to guide quality improvement and policymaking.
- To collect standardized, high quality national data on hip fractures (demographics, treatment, outcomes).
- To generate real time and annual audit reports for hospitals to benchmark care.
- To monitor key clinical indicators (e.g., time to surgery, pain management, postoperative recovery).
- To guide quality improvement initiatives and policy development.
- To serve as a resource for research, guideline development, and national health planning.
A national, standardized hip fracture database established for the first time in Nepal. Hospital specific and national audit reports produced annually. Improved monitoring of patient recovery, complications, and readmissions. Enhanced accountability and quality improvement across hospitals. Evidence based inputs for national health policies and clinical guidelines. Reduced disability and economic burden through better acute care and rehabilitation.
