The Nepal Integrated National Health Survey (NI-NHS).

Preparatory Phase / Pilot Implementation (Planned to be Continuous in Future)

Ongoing

Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP), Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), and the World Health Organization (WHO), with anticipated technical and financial support from UNICEF, UNFPA, and other development partners.

All seven provinces and selected districts across ecological belts (Mountain, Hill, and Terai) will be included to ensure national and subnational estimates.

Reliable, comprehensive, and timely health data are essential for evidence-based decision-making, strategic planning, and monitoring health system performance. Currently, Nepal conducts multiple surveys individually, including the Nepal National Micronutrient Status Survey (NNMSS, 2016), STEPS survey of NCD risk factors (2019), National Mental Health Survey (2020), Nepal Health Facility Survey (NHFS, 2021), and Nepal Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS, 2022).This survey integrates core population-based content into a single, cohesive framework, optimizing resources, minimizing redundancy, and ensuring a continuous flow of comparable data. This approach will strengthen health system performance, support SDG monitoring, reduce disparities, and enable the government to independently plan, allocate resources, and evaluate programs sustainably.

  1. To measure national and subnational coverage of maternal and child health indicators, including family planning, antenatal care, skilled birth attendance, immunization, and child morbidity and mortality.
  2. To determine the prevalence of malnutrition, stunting, wasting, underweight, and micronutrient deficiencies, and assess nutrition program coverage.
  3. To assess the prevalence of common mental health disorders and patterns of service access and utilization.
  4. To evaluate access to, quality of, and equity in health services, and assess facility readiness to meet population needs.
  5. To consolidate data from multiple previous surveys into a single, integrated survey framework, providing actionable evidence for policy-making and sustainable health system strengthening.

Improved evidence-based policy and planning through timely data and gap identification to strengthen health system performance. Reliable data and an integrated survey framework will support SDG progress monitoring while ensuring cost-effective and sustainable health tracking.
